Case Study 1 (Energy Saving)
DML management and estates have been praised for their hard work in reducing gas use across the dockyard during 2005.
Over the last three years DML have been working with Clouds Environmental Consultancy Ltd, part funded by the Carbon Trust, to assist in identifying energy waste across the site.
Last year saw DML able to implement some of the findings and partly isolate some of the extensive dockyard steam system.
As a result of their efforts DML have been able to reduce their gas use by a staggering 13%. This amounts to around 3,800 Tonnes of CO2 emissions which is almost the same as a Type 23 Destroyer ! Increasing energy costs have meant that the overall savings available to DML were in excess of £0.5M per year. This figure is likely to increase as rising energy costs hit industry hard.
The main findings from the survey enabled the client to isolate part of the steam supply during the summer by providing alternative means of heat to those that required it. Many areas of the dockyard have changed in use over the years and rationalisation of the yard and operations have enabled this to be carried out.
In addition to saving energy, isolation of parts of the steam ring main have enabled the maintenance teams to carry out extensive repairs to tackle steam leaks and replace damaged sections of pipe work that was previously impossible to complete.
It is the aim of DML to be able to fully isolate the steam system during the summer months and recognise further annual savings of more than £400,000 per year or more than 4,000 Tonnes CO2. This will be carried out during the next two years with the aim of complete summer shutdown during 2007.
DML are continuing their work with Clouds Environmental to reduce energy use across the site and do their bit in helping the environment.
